EU is always being held back because it takes time to translate the game into the many different languages of Europe. I guarantee if EU had a unified and standard language, you'd see more EU games release in the same time frame as US/JP.
Physically smaller units also means cheaper shipping and warehouse storage. Going slim is the best move, financially for Sony.

Ask yourself this, why would Sony confirm the PS3 slim being real in this fashion? A company will never officially confirm rumors or leaked pics. No company has done it before. Where's the big surprise in that?

The box picture alone confirms the PS3 slim is real. Not to mention the green and pink factory workspace in the other pics. That's how Sony's production center look like in China.
That's why they reduce the physical size of the Cell and RSX, thus dramatically decreasing the temperature as well. Ever thought of that? Sony did it with the PS1, and they did it with the PS2. Fan-less systems. Same will happen to the PS3 slim.

Yeah its pretty bland and kinda ugly. But then again, I also thought the PS3 was ugly as hell too when it was first revealed. It grew on me and now I think its better looking than the previous PlayStations and most consoles out.
